How managed IT is priced

Per user

The most common model. You pay a monthly fee for each person, which covers their laptop, phone and accounts. It is easy to budget and scales as you hire.

Per device

You pay for each computer, server or network device. This suits businesses with shared devices, such as warehouses, workshops, clinics or retail counters, where several staff use one PC.

Tiered bundles

Many providers sell two to four plans. Lower tiers often leave out security tools, backup or after-hours cover, so check what each tier really includes before comparing prices.

Base plan plus hourly

Some plans cover monitoring and patching, with support or extra work charged by the hour. Published hourly rates in Brisbane range from about $175 ex GST to $200 inc. GST.

Project work and onsite visits

Migrations, office moves, new installations and hardware rollouts are usually quoted separately. Some providers also charge for onsite visits or travel outside their core area.

What drives the price up or down

  • Number of users and devices
  • On-premises servers and the number of sites
  • The security stack: endpoint detection and response, email security, MFA management, SIEM and monitoring
  • Your Essential Eight target maturity level
  • What is backed up and how often restores are tested
  • Support hours and after-hours cover
  • How much onsite work you need, and travel to regional sites
  • Compliance and industry requirements
  • Contract term
  • The state of your environment at the start, which affects onboarding work

What should be included in a managed IT plan

A solid plan for a small or medium business should cover:

  • Helpdesk support for your staff
  • 24/7 monitoring and regular patching
  • Endpoint security (antivirus and EDR)
  • Email security
  • Microsoft 365 management
  • Backup with tested restores
  • Vendor management (internet, phones, line-of-business software)
  • Onboarding and offboarding of staff
  • Regular reporting
  • Strategy and planning reviews

Managed IT vs an in-house IT person

For most small businesses, managed IT costs less than employing a full-time IT person, and you get a team with security, cloud and networking skills instead of one generalist who also needs holidays and sick leave. Larger businesses often combine both through co-managed IT. We compare the two in more detail in MSP vs in-house IT costs.

Do prices differ between Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Toowoomba?

Not in a consistent way. Published Toowoomba prices include both the lowest figures we found and mid-market plans, while Brisbane and Gold Coast pricing guides cluster around $100–$220 per user per month. The bigger regional factor is onsite work: some providers quote travel to outlying towns separately. See managed IT in Toowoomba, the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

How to compare managed IT quotes

Line quotes up like-for-like by checking:

  • Unit: per user or per device, and ex or inc. GST

  • Exclusions: projects, onsite visits, after hours, licences
  • Service levels: response targets and support hours
