Short answer: Odoo suits growing small and medium businesses that want a broad set of ready-made apps and a polished interface. ERPNext suits cost-conscious businesses that want open-source flexibility and are happy to shape the system around their processes. Oracle suits larger or more complex organisations with multiple entities, heavy compliance needs and bigger budgets. The right choice depends on your processes, not the brand.
Choosing an ERP is one of the biggest technology decisions a growing business makes. We often speak with business owners in Toowoomba, on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane who know their spreadsheets and disconnected apps are holding them back, but aren’t sure which platform to move to. This guide compares the three ERP platforms our in-house team works with: Odoo, ERPNext and Oracle.
What is an ERP system?
ERP stands for enterprise resource planning. It brings your core business processes into one system with one database, including:
- Finance and accounting
- Inventory and warehousing
- Purchasing and supplier management
- Sales, quoting and invoicing
- Manufacturing or project management
- HR and timesheets (depending on the platform)
The main benefit is a single version of the truth. Stock, orders and finances update together, so you stop re-keying data and reconciling one spreadsheet against another.
How do Odoo, ERPNext and Oracle compare at a glance?
| Factor | Odoo | ERPNext | Oracle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical fit | Growing SMBs | Cost-conscious SMBs, manufacturing, distribution, services | Mid-market to large, complex organisations |
| Software model | Open-core: community edition plus paid enterprise edition | Fully open source | Commercial cloud and on-premises products |
| Ease of use | Modern, polished interface | Clean and practical | Powerful, with a steeper learning curve |
| Customisation | Strong, through modules and development | Very flexible, with low-code customisation built in | Extensive, usually with specialist effort |
| Hosting | Vendor cloud, partner hosting or self-hosted | Vendor cloud or self-hosted | Oracle Cloud or on-premises |
| Best when | You want many apps that work together out of the box | You want control and flexibility at a lower software cost | You need scale, deep financial controls and multi-entity reporting |
Licence models and pricing change, so always check the vendor’s current pricing before you budget.
When is Odoo the right choice?
Odoo is a modular platform. You start with the apps you need, such as accounting, inventory, sales or a website, and add more as you grow. It works well for businesses that:
- Want a wide range of business apps under one login
- Value a modern, easy-to-learn interface for staff
- Plan to add e-commerce, CRM or point of sale alongside core ERP
- Have fairly standard processes that match Odoo’s built-in workflows
The things to watch are edition choice, since some features are only in the paid enterprise edition, and keeping customisation under control so upgrades stay manageable.
When is ERPNext the right choice?
ERPNext is a fully open-source ERP built on the Frappe framework. It covers accounting, inventory, manufacturing, projects, HR and more. It is a good fit for businesses that:
- Want to avoid per-user software licence fees for the software itself
- Have specific processes and want to customise forms, workflows and reports
- Run manufacturing, distribution or service operations
- Want the option to self-host, for example on AWS or Azure
Open source does not mean free to run. You still pay for hosting, implementation, customisation and support, so budget for those.
When is Oracle the right choice?
Oracle’s ERP products are aimed at larger and more complex organisations. They fit businesses that:
- Run multiple entities, currencies or countries
- Need advanced financial controls, consolidation and audit trails
- Have large transaction volumes or complex supply chains
- Already rely on other Oracle products, such as Oracle Database
For many small businesses, Oracle is more than they need today. For mid-market organisations planning serious growth, it can be the platform they won’t outgrow. Read more about our Oracle solutions and services.
What should you compare before choosing an ERP?
Don’t start with features. Start with how your business works. We suggest comparing platforms against:
- Your core processes. Map how quotes, orders, stock, invoices and month-end actually happen today.
- Must-have vs nice-to-have. Separate the requirements you can’t operate without from the wish list.
- Integration needs. List the systems the ERP must connect to, such as Microsoft 365, CRM, e-commerce, payroll and banking. See our integration services.
- Australian requirements. Check GST handling, BAS reporting, Single Touch Payroll (if payroll is in scope) and local bank feeds.
- Data quality. Messy customer, product and supplier data makes any migration harder.
- Total cost. Include licences, hosting, implementation, customisation, training and ongoing support over several years.
- Internal capacity. Someone in your business needs to own the system after go-live.
How much customisation is too much?
Every ERP can be customised, but heavy customisation adds cost now and work at every upgrade. A good rule is to adapt your processes to the standard system where the difference doesn’t matter to your customers. Customise only where it gives you a real advantage. When you need something truly bespoke, our software development team can build it, and our post on custom software vs off-the-shelf explains how to decide.
How does the implementation process work?
Most ERP projects follow a similar path:
- Discovery and requirements workshops
- Platform selection (fit-gap analysis)
- Solution design
- Configuration and customisation
- Data migration and trial loads
- Testing and staff training
- Go-live
- Ongoing support and improvement
Loginet’s own in-house team delivers each stage: selection, implementation, customisation, integration, data migration and support. You deal with one team from start to finish.

Frequently asked questions
Is Odoo or ERPNext cheaper?
ERPNext has no software licence fee because it is fully open source. Odoo’s community edition is also free, but many businesses use the paid enterprise edition. In both cases, implementation, hosting and support usually make up most of the total cost.
Is Oracle too big for a small business?
Often, yes. Oracle is designed for complex, larger organisations. A small business with simple processes is usually better served by Odoo or ERPNext, unless it is planning major growth or already relies on Oracle.
Do these ERPs handle Australian GST and BAS?
They can be configured for Australian tax requirements. Check the localisation and reporting for your specific needs during selection, especially if you want payroll inside the ERP.
Can we move from our accounting software or spreadsheets to an ERP?
Yes. Most ERP projects start from accounting software and spreadsheets. Data migration covers cleansing, mapping and loading customers, suppliers, products and opening balances.
Can we host ERPNext or Odoo on AWS or Azure?
Yes. Both can be self-hosted in the cloud. That gives you more control but means you are responsible for security, backups and updates.
How long does it take to choose an ERP?
A structured selection, covering requirements workshops and a fit-gap review of shortlisted platforms, usually takes weeks rather than months for a small or medium business.
